Al Maktoum International Airport (DWC) is transforming into what will eventually become the largest airport in the world by capacity<\/strong>. While it started small, the long-term vision is vast \u2014 built to serve over 150 million passengers annually in its first major phase<\/strong> and eventually reaching even greater heights.<\/p>\n

Construction of Al Maktoum International began in 2005<\/strong>, with the airport officially opening in 2010 as a cargo-only hub. Passenger services followed in 2013<\/strong>, and it has since operated under the name Dubai World Central (DWC). Located in Jebel Ali, Dubai South, the site is set to evolve into a fully integrated aerotropolis, blending aviation, logistics, and urban development.<\/p>\n

Phase One: Completion by 2032<\/h4>\n

The first phase of construction \u2014 expected to be completed by 2032 <\/strong>\u2014 is already underway. Here\u2019s what it includes:<\/p>\n

  • West Terminal Building <\/strong>connected to Dubai by a new express metro line<\/li>\n
  • Concourse 1 with 100 contact gates<\/strong><\/li>\n
  • An Automated People Mover (APM) system<\/strong> with four underground stations<\/li>\n
  • Runways 2 and 3<\/strong><\/li>\n
  • Advanced baggage handling systems<\/strong> and ground service networks<\/li>\n
  • Dedicated support facilities including energy centres<\/strong> and fire stations<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    Phase Two: Expansion and Doubling Down<\/h4>\n

    In the following decade, the airport will expand further:<\/p>\n

    • A second concourse<\/strong> identical to the first<\/li>\n
    • 200 total contact gates<\/strong><\/li>\n
    • Three more APM stations<\/strong><\/li>\n
    • Expanded road networks and baggage systems<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

      Final Phase: Global Mega Hub Status<\/h4>\n

      When fully realised, the airport will be five times the size of Dubai International Airport (DXB)<\/strong>. The final build will feature:<\/p>\n

      • East Terminal, Concourse 3, and Concourse 4<\/strong><\/li>\n
      • Integration with Etihad Rail and a new Dubai Metro line<\/li>\n
      • 14 APM stations forming a loop<\/strong> through the terminals<\/li>\n
      • Five parallel runways<\/strong><\/li>\n
      • 400+ aircraft gates<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

        According to Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum, the first phase will be delivered in the next 10 years. However, the full airport buildout will likely stretch into the 2050s<\/strong>, as shared by Dubai Airports CEO Paul Griffiths.<\/p>\n

        A private jet terminal is also on the cards by 2030<\/strong>, with DWC expected to become the world\u2019s busiest travel hub by then.<\/p>\n

        What Happens to DXB?<\/h4>\n

        Once DWC is fully operational, all operations will shift from Dubai International Airport<\/strong>. Maintaining DXB beyond that would require massive investment in upgrades, making a full move more practical in the long run.<\/p>\n

        Where Can You Fly from Al Maktoum Right Now?<\/h4>\n

        Though it’s still developing, DWC currently serves a number of international destinations, including:<\/p>\n

        • Europe:<\/strong> Copenhagen, Prague, Berlin, Cologne, Milan, Amsterdam, Stockholm, Zurich<\/li>\n
        • UK:<\/strong> Newcastle<\/li>\n
        • Gulf & Asia:<\/strong> Riyadh, Jeddah, Male<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
